The National Defence Academy exam opens the door to the Indian Army, Navy, and Air Force for Class 12 students. NDA is challenging not because it is academically unusual — Class 12 Maths and General Ability form the backbone — but because very few aspirants prepare systematically. Here is the roadmap that changes that.

Negative Marking is Severe
NDA carries 1/3 negative marking. Paper I (Maths): each wrong answer costs 0.83 marks. Paper II (GAT): each wrong answer costs 1.33 marks. Never guess unless you can eliminate at least 2 options.
Mathematics: Class 11–12 Syllabus, Exam-Level Pressure
NDA Maths covers Algebra, Matrices & Determinants, Trigonometry, Analytical Geometry (2D and 3D), Differential Calculus, Integral Calculus, Differential Equations, Vector Algebra, Statistics, and Probability. Most of this is standard Class 11–12 CBSE syllabus. The difficulty lies in time pressure, not in unfamiliar concepts.
High-Priority Maths Topics
- Trigonometry: typically 15–18 questions. Master identities, inverse trig, and height-distance.
- Algebra & Quadratic Equations: fundamental to almost everything else.
- Matrices and Determinants: 8–10 questions, highly formulaic and scoring.
- Probability & Statistics: 10–12 questions, straightforward if practised.
- Calculus (Differential + Integral): 20–25 questions combined — highest-weight area.
General Ability Test: Two Papers in One
GAT (Paper II) is split into English (200 marks) and General Knowledge (400 marks). English covers grammar, vocabulary, RC, and sentence rearrangement. General Knowledge spans six subjects: Physics, Chemistry, General Science, History, Geography, and Current Affairs.
Science (Physics + Chemistry + Biology)
Science carries roughly 100 marks in GK. Level is Class 10–11 NCERT. Physics: laws of motion, optics, electricity, magnetism, and thermodynamics. Chemistry: periodic table, chemical bonding, acids/bases, and metallurgy. Biology: human body systems and basic ecology.
History and Geography
NDA History focuses on the Freedom Struggle, major battles, and post-independence events. Geography covers Indian physiography (rivers, mountains, soils, climate), economic geography, and basic world geography. NCERT Class 9–12 is the primary source — no supplementary books required.
SSB Interview: What Written Toppers Often Miss
Clearing the written exam gets you to the Services Selection Board (SSB) — a 5-day psychological and physical assessment. Around 45% of written qualifiers are recommended at SSB. It tests Officer Like Qualities (OLQ): leadership, social intelligence, mental toughness, decision-making under pressure, and self-confidence.
SSB Preparation
Read a quality newspaper daily for 6 months before SSB. Participate in group activities, sports, and debates. The SSB does not want perfection — it wants authenticity and potential.
12-Month NDA Preparation Timeline
- Months 1–4: NCERT Class 11–12 Maths cover-to-cover. NCERT Class 9–12 for Physics, Chemistry, History, and Geography.
- Months 5–8: Previous year NDA question papers (last 10 years). Identify recurring topics. Start Maths sectional tests.
- Months 9–10: Full-length NDA mocks (3 per month). Detailed analysis. Current Affairs daily reading.
- Months 11–12: Mock-only mode. 2 full mocks per week. Revise error log. Physical preparation for SSB.
