Both come from the same exam — NET qualification alone makes you eligible to apply for Assistant Professor roles, while JRF (awarded to a smaller top-ranking subset, within reserved quotas) additionally grants a research fellowship stipend.

You choose one subject from the list NTA notifies for each cycle — typically your postgraduate specialisation, across 80+ available subjects from Commerce to Computer Science to Education.

There is no fixed cap on the number of attempts — you can apply every cycle as long as you meet that cycle's eligibility and age criteria (relevant mainly for JRF).
