Sectional Cut-offs

IBPS PO has both overall and sectional cut-offs. Scoring high in two sections while ignoring the third will still disqualify you. Maintain minimum proficiency across all three sections.

Prelims: What It Takes to Clear

Prelims is a speed test. 100 questions in 60 minutes with sectional time limits means roughly 20 minutes per section — that is 34–40 seconds per question. The target: solve easy questions instantly, skip difficult ones, and never spend more than 60 seconds on any single question.

Quantitative Aptitude — Build Calculation Speed First

For Prelims QA, emphasis is on speed over depth. Simplification, number series, quadratic equations, and basic DI sets are high-frequency and time-efficient. Practice multiplication tables up to 30, squares up to 40, cubes up to 20, and fraction-to-decimal conversions — these alone can save 3–4 minutes per section.

Reasoning — Accuracy Over Everything

Puzzles and seating arrangements form 50–60% of the Reasoning section. They are time-consuming but highly scoring once you identify the pattern. Practice daily: one linear arrangement, one floor/building puzzle, one blood-relation set. For Prelims, target finishing Reasoning in 18 minutes — leaving 2 minutes for review.

English Language — The Easy Win

Most banking aspirants neglect English and pay for it with the sectional cut-off. Reading Comprehension is the biggest chunk — do 2 RC passages daily from quality editorial sources. Error spotting, sentence rearrangement, and fill-in-the-blanks become mechanical once you know the grammar rules behind them.

Mains Strategy: Beyond the Basics

Mains Data Analysis & Interpretation (DI) is where most Prelims qualifiers struggle. Complex tabular data, mixed graphs, and percentage-heavy calculations require comfortable approximation. If an answer option is 342 and your rough calculation gives 339, pick 342 — do not waste time computing the exact value.

Banking Awareness — The Hidden Cut-off

General/Economy/Banking Awareness carries 40 marks in Mains and is the easiest to score if prepared consistently. Topics: RBI policies, monetary policy terms (repo rate, CRR, SLR, MSF), Basel norms, recent banking mergers, landmark RBI circulars, government schemes, and budget highlights. Spend 20 minutes daily on this from Month 2 onward.

4-Month Preparation Plan

  1. Month 1: QA basics (arithmetic, number series, simplification). English grammar foundations. Reasoning: puzzles, syllogism, inequality.
  2. Month 2: DI — start with simple tables and bar graphs. Current Affairs + Banking Awareness. 2 mock Prelims per week.
  3. Month 3: Mains-level QA and DI. RC passages daily. Full Mains mocks (at least 2 per week) with detailed analysis.
  4. Month 4: Mock-only mode. 3 mocks per week, thorough analysis, targeted revision of weak areas.

Speed Building Tip

Use AptiEdge Calculation Booster daily for 10 minutes. By Month 3, target solving 30 questions in 10 minutes. This speed translates directly to saved time in the actual exam.
